Skills an Employer Wants

The job market is ever-changing and employers is seeking specific skills and abilities to match a particular job. However, technical skills are not the only ones that are important: there are others that are universal to all employers.

Research indicates that most job seekers have these universal skill sets or can improve those areas in which they are weak. Even better news is that once interviewees understand just what is required, they can tailor their resumes, cover letters and even interview language to aparticular job situation.

So-called  “soft skills” that are very important to employers are communication skills, which includes listening, verbal and written expression. Also important are analytical and research skills, the ability to assess or evaluate a certain situation, decipher the information and identify those issues that must be addressed.

In today’s job market there are very few jobs that do not require computer or technical skills.  In addition to a basic understanding of computer use, a job seeker must also be experienced in word processing, spreadsheets and email. Flexibility and managing multiple priorities involves multi-tasking. In today’s fast-paced workforce this has become a necessity rather than a nicety.

The team player portion of this skill set is also of utmost importance, as most jobs today are based in a global market in a diverse work environment. Flexibility, interpersonal ability and leadership strength are also important skills to master in today’s job market.  The good news, however, is that each of these can be learned and developed through self-study, internet research or formal classwork.

Research indicates that the qualities most often sought by employers have very little to do with technical skill and more to do with personality and attitude. Workers with the right attitude and personal enthusiasm are far more likely to be hired, AND are more likely to achieve success.
