In today’s economy, it is more difficult to find a job than it has been in the recent past. Often times, job hunters are taking a more traditional approach to the job hunt by looking in newspapers and online at help wanted ads. In today’s marketplace, there are many more applicants for a company to choose from, and this leaves your chances of landing your dream job slim to none. You can, however, do several things that will put you one step closer to the job of your dreams.
First, you need to set your self apart from the competition. In order to do that, you need to try to take a less conventional approach to really make you stand out from the crowd. One suggestion would be to stop looking for the jobs everyone else is seeking. It’s not a bad idea to watch the help wanted ads in your Sunday paper or on the internet, but if that is what everyone else is doing, you are going to have competition for that job. Try to find the job of your dreams by networking. Many great jobs are never even listed in help wanted sections. Talk to friends and people you meet to see if their company is hiring, then send in your resume with their recommendation. This will likely catch the attention of the people that will actually be judging you and your resume.
Another good job hunting tip is to request an ‘information interview’ which is just exactly what it says it is. You are attempting to gain INFORMATION about a particular firm—you are NOT applying for a job with that company. (At least , not yet anyway.!) Don’t end your hunt with a telephone conversation. If at all possible, try to meet that person face to face, as you will be far more memorable if the person has a visual image of you in his mind rather than just a voice on the phone.
Finding a job can be challenging at times, but if you make yourself stand out from the crowd and show the company that you are a "go-getter," you’ll have better odds than those who are in line for the same few positions.
