Fifty and Fired

One of the first liabilities we encounter when we turn 50 is the belief that there’s no place for us. That’s not to say that age isn’t a liability because the 50+ generation is perceived as being set in our ways, having health problems, exhibiting little energy, and resenting younger people.

The benefits that are gained in comparison to the reputation, however, are in fact inaccurate. Not only are older people smart, but they also have a greater repository of experience that younger people may not have gained. They are quick thinkers, loyal, and reliable, and they exemplify people skills that youth cannot offer. Older people in the job market tend to have a good attitude, are highly motivated and have learned  valuable lessons from their past successes and failures.  (Of course, there will always be those that are not as motivated because they were passed over for a promotion, got fired, or were not recognized for their efforts.) This is another stereotype that plagues those who are 50 and over.

If you all into this age range and are searching for a job, all negativity must be put aside or  left behind. Some good advice from an executive who teaches clients how to find jobs, is to set aside one hour each week for negativity. He recommends that this be at the end of the week, on Friday, as it is important to stay positive and persevere the rest of the week in order to find a great job.

During your interviews, focus on your strengths. Be sure to mention instances where you were more effective on the job than younger or less experienced colleagues, or point out some of the skills you have developed from study or on-the-job training.  You want to present a picture of yourself as capable, experienced, mature, and reliable
