Helpful Hints for Managers

The first rules for employee management are the "office rules." These should be explained to each interviewee at the time of a potential person's hire, not after. What good does it do to know a person isn't a team player after the fact? This should be realized before they are hired.

Often people don't realize a person's attendance problem until after they are hired. If a person has an attendance problem at one job it is not usually communicated to the next potential employer. If you have an employee with poor attendance there are several things you can do to try and correct this problem. First, ask why they are late. If they give the excuse of an appointment ask for a letter or a form of confirmation from the place where they went. Keep a list of all tardiness, give written notification of potential disciplinary action in the form of a memo noting each date and time and if the tardiness continues follow through with discipline.

Bad performance is another issue that often needs addressing in the work place. This type of problem needs to be addressed daily and with a positive approach. Praise good performance and address poor performance with constructive criticism. Motivate the staff with current reviews, feedback and appraisals. Make note of a job well done and never forget it is the staff that keeps your business going.
