Sending Resumes to Employers

A cover letter is an important tool to use when submitting your resume. However, unless you are adding truly important information that isn’t covered in the body of your resume, it’s usually not a good idea to write any more than three or four paragraphs. In other words, avoid re-hashing your resume in letter format. Be sure to use clear, concise language to eliminate any doubts as to your qualifications for the position.

Space on a resume is at a premium, so don’t waste it on vague statements of objective such as: "To obtain a challenging position that will facilitate future growth and development” as this is not an efficient use of space. Instead, summarizing your various accomplishments to stand out from other applicants.

Make sure to submit your credentials in either an Microsoft Word document, or in a ‘cut-and-paste friendly’ format. This is important, since everything else you have done right won't matter if the recipient can’t read your resume! Format your document in such a way that it can be cut and pasted without becoming a "glob" of text, or without HTML code splattered all over it. Providing employers with a website link to your resume can also be an effective way of submitting your credentials.

The world of resume writing is changing rapidly, to the extent that hiring managers are now no longer impressed as much by the 'look' and 'feel' of a document.   Instead, they want a candidate who stands out, and who possesses differentiating features or characteristics.
