When putting together your resume package for a new job it is very important to include a cover letter. A cover letter introduces you as a prospective employee and gives the employer an idea of your basic skills and expertise. When composing your cover letter be honest and forthright, and make sure you are being yourself.
Many employers will routinely discard resumes that arrive without cover letters on the theory that if a candidate did not take the time to include a summary of their credentials, they may not demonstrate the kind of thoroughness required on the job. Jobs are at such a premium these days, why take the chance that your application will be tossed aside?
Note that you should always, always, ALWAYS proofread any document or e mail you send--including cover letters. Make sure your cover letter is written in professional English, to ensure that it will present your credentials in a polished, sophisticated manner and be easily understood by the reader(s.) Think of your cover letter is your personal Ambassador prior to meeting the employer. In other words, it needs to have the same “dress for success” quality as you do when going to the interview.
Like any other document you submit with your resume, cover letters should be clean and neat, to say the least. No typos, stains, erasures or mistakes should be in evidence. This is true because any errors or flaws on your cover letter or resume, sends a message to the prospective employer that are not the perfect employee for whom they are looking, and this could, in fact, lose you the interview. Remember that the function of a cover letter is to set you apart, or distinguish you from other applicants. Therefore, a resume with a well-written, well thought-out cover letter will stand out from the crowd. If you are serious about a position, research it, send a great resume and compose an eye-catching cover letter.
