Fifty and Out of Work

Being told you are laid off when you are fifty years old can be unsettling, to say the least. You may have given many years to your company, and it is natural to feel upset after you have been let go. Even though it may feel impossible to get back into the workforce, it is easier than you think.

Finding a job is obviously the hardest part. Most places don’t take walk-in applications anymore, and often you can no longer set up an appointment by phone. Almost everything is done through the internet, and if you get an interview, you usually have to fill out a variety of forms on a computer.

Even Resumes are different now: it is generally accepted that you do not need to cover positions you have held more than 10 years ago. Your recent work experience is far more valuable to a prospective employer than what you did 23 years ago!  Focus on providing as much detailed information as you can in the 2-3 pages you are writing/updating.  Obviously, someone just starting out their career won’t need 3 pages: in fact, that person should be able to cover positions held to date in just one to 1 and a half pages.

So: How long has it been since you have written a resume? If it has been quite a while, you may want to hire a professional to help you update both your resume and cover letter.  If you are working with a ‘Career Counsellor’ instead of a simple resume writing service, this person will also be able to advise you as to what the proper protocol is for interviews: what to say, and more importantly, what NOT to say!

You may need to hone your computer skills, get an email address and even a cell phone. You want to appear as technically savvy as the younger crowd in today’s business world. Take some time to learn about what technologies are available these days.  If you haven’t kept up with recent tools, you will be amazed and perhaps a bit overwhelmed about what is now available.  If this is the case, go to your local High School or community college and find yourself a student who can teach you what you need to know to help you find a rewarding career. Don’t forget, too, that many schools offer basic computer courses that can help you get started.

It is worth noting that some candidates looking for jobs after 50 have been forced to settle for less pay, less hours and less benefits. Others have just decided to retire early. However, this latter option is unrealistic for most people. Staying calm and confident is the key to getting your foot back in the door and finding another rewarding career: it is NOT too late!
