Honesty During Interviews

Landing a job can be difficult. Once an interview is scheduled, some people freeze during the conversation and do not know what to say. The question to ask and to plan for is how honest should one be during the interview, as it could be the make or break your chances for that job.

It’s hard to tell how honest one should be during the interview because different employers want to hear different things. For example, when discussing past jobs, it may not be a good idea to mention how many jobs, if there were several, one has had in the last few months. If one was fired, it is important to discuss how the problem has been fixed and how that experience aided in your maturity and mental progression. Other employers want to hear what happened rather than excuses and fake remedies.

In a position that requires high ethics and honesty, like banking or insurances, employers are more likely ready to listen to how one would benefit their customers in terms of customer service and integrity rather than how one did not get along with their previous boss. It is suggested to not go off the deep end with tall tales nor be too humble in terms of past experiences and accomplishments. Down the middle is the best policy, according to interviewed employers. One of the biggest recommendations during an interview when discussing past jobs is to not blame everyone else for one’s shortcomings. Blaming others may be a sign of someone skirting responsibility.

Honesty is said to be the best policy. Although that may be true, some would agree that omitting certain information is not considered dishonesty.
