Tips for the Interviewer

Conducting interviews must be done with care. It is vital to remember that the interviewee is often nervous about being interviewed for a job. Remember to be professional, while making sure not to intimidate the interviewee. There are ways to find out information about your potential hire without making the situation more nerve racking.

Be careful how you ask interview questions. One's nationality should never been addressed in an interview, but it is important to know whether or not they are a legal US citizen. Religion is another hot question that could land your company in a lawsuit. It is always advisable to refer to your company policies when unsure what questions to ask. Your company policies will have all the necessary information you will need to ensure you are asking the right questions, without being offensive.

Do not make assumptions about a candidate's, age and do not ask any age specific questions. Questions about age, sex, personal life, marital status, family and children could be considered discrimination. Questions about disabilities and any health related issues are to be avoided as well.

As an interviewer, your primary objective is to verify whether the interviewee can do the job. If the job has certain requirements, such as repetitive heavy lifting or bending, you can ask questions pertinent to this directly, as it relates to the position. Otherwise, it is better to stick to specific questions regarding the position and a few questions in order to get to know the interviewee. By sticking to simple, direct questions you are sure to find the best person for the job, and stay out of trouble.
