Building a Resume

Planning a successful resume is a lot easier than you might think. A resume should consist of both your relevant work experience and your education beginning with your current position and ending with your first one. The most important rule in creating a resume is to be completely honest with all your information.  You never know when your references or background will be checked, and if you are caught falsifying information, not only will you not get the job, but you will be embarrassed and humiliated as well. If you have a strong interest in something, but lack specific experience in it, say that you are eager to work in the area to learn more about it.  Don’t invent some mythical project you were involved in, just for the sake of getting a job.

A typical resume should include five sections. The first of these should provide personal information such as your name, address, phone number and email address. The next section should state your career objective. This should indicate what kind of a job you are seeking. The third section will be your work experience, again, starting with your most recent position. Most resumes do not list work experience beyond 10 years, however there is nothing wrong with doing so, if you can limit what you say such that your resume does not become overly long.

The fourth section should list your educational background, and you should list your college information here (or high school information if you did not attend college). Last but not least, include a special section that pertains to your activities/awards/community service/articles written/travel and, if interesting enough your hobbies.

A statement which summarizes all your qualities and why you would be a perfect candidate for the position being offered belongs in the cover letter you will write when applying for this position.

Writing a successful resume is not difficult, but it is time-consuming, to be sure. You never know when your references or background will be checked. With these pointers in mind, begin building your resume and get the job you've been waiting for!
