There are several things to consider when you’re trying to find your ideal career. It is important to find a job you love and one which is fulfilling. If, at the start of your day you consistently dread going to work, it’s probably time to pursue another occupation. While it would be wonderful if you could make a living doing what you love, this may not prove to be feasible. You need to also ensure that the career you choose will be something that will allow you to earn enough money take care of you and your family’s financial situation.
In selecting a career, ask yourself this: What do you enjoy doing and what is your passion? It is important to consider these things first, as they will focus your career search. If you know you like a subject such as art or history, concentrate on studying that subject in college. Learn all you can about it—over and above the course curriculum. Go on field trips, attend supplementary lectures, participate in conferences and workshops. In short, do all you can to ‘hit the ground running’ upon graduation.
But, what if you don't have a favorite subject?? By pursuing a course of study in college, it is likely that you’ll find something to inspire you. Study a wide range of topics so that you can decide which ones you like and don't like. Many people often get their degrees in one field, and later decide to try something else. Or, for that matter, they simply ‘fall into’ a fulfilling and interesting career, almost by accident. Whatever your situation, it’s important to remember that the career you have chosen is NOT a life sentence: it is never too late to change your path, and try something else.
Having a plan in mind is important so that you can take appropriate steps towards pursuing a particular career. However, don't panic if you haven’t yet formulated such a plan. Pursue further education or seek the advice and guidance of professional career counselors to help identify what might constitute the *right* career for you.
