What Not to Do When Fired

Have you ever been fired from your job? It happens to everyone at some point in their lives. Getting fired from your job is not the end of the world, though it may seem like it at the time. Your self-esteem may be crushed, but you have to hold your head high and be ready to move on. It does not mean you are a failure and it does not mean you are a bad person. Everyone makes mistakes that they might be terminated for. Also, the job might not have been the right one for you. Getting fired might lead to a better job for which you are more suited.

It is important not to fight back with your boss when they tell you of your termination. While this may be your first reaction, you don't want to hurt your chances of receiving a good reference for your resume. Thank your former boss for his time, and ask if you would be able to use him for a reference. More often than not, former employers are willing to give you a recommendation for employment.

If you get fired, anger is a very normal and human reaction.  However, leave with dignity. Do not stop to gossip with former co-workers and do not say anything derogatory about your supervisor or the person who terminated you. When you do finally talk with your former co-workers, make sure you tell them what happened without name calling or resentment.

When you start looking for other employment, never bad mouth former employers that terminated you. This makes you look vindictive and hostile. This is not the image you want to project in an interview. You have to convince a new employer that you are capable of doing the job, regardless of what happened at your last position.
