It is important to plan a resume before actually writing it. The resume needs to set the writer apart from others who are submitting their resumes. The resume is not a history of the writer’s past but more of an advertisement to help the submitter get an interview. To get through the screening process of the resume the applicant must come across as a professional person with excellent writing skills. For example, if applying for a nursing job the resume should reflect relevant experience and education related to nursing. Computer proficiency is also important, because knowledge of computers and their use will most likely be expected. Programs that are helpful to be familiar with are Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. We are living in an age of multi-culturalism, so it is helpful to know a second or third language. This may separate the applicant from other candidates.
Careful formatting of your resume such as using bullets, bold style, and various sizes of font may also help to set off that particular resume. Using these types of tools in a word processor will make your key accomplishments and skills stand out. Normally, the resume begins with objectives, and moves to qualifications that may be impressive and set this candidate above others.
The resume writer should use proper and professional grammar. Words such as team work, team player, multi-tasking and organized will stand out to potential employers. Above all, make sure your resume is on a clean sheet of paper, without wrinkles, and always bring extra copies.
