Working From Home: Panacea or Problem?

If you are considering ditching your current position in favor of working from home, you will undoubtedly find that there are advantages AND disadvantages.  For some, the advantages greatly outweigh the disadvantages.

One area that comes to mind almost immediately is that of costs. By staying at home to work, you can economize on each day on gas, parking, insurance, lunches, clothing, medical treatment and childcare--to say nothing of the fact that you will likely to be more productive by virtue of not having so many distractions.

Just think: no more annoying staff meetings at 8:15 am when you’re brain is barely running. NO more colleagues standing around the office cooler sucking you into the vortex of office gossip. No more suffering through those interminable late afternoon meetings where the boss drones on and on and on.

Sound too good to be true?  Maybe. But that depends on what kind of person you are. Do you just thrive on the interaction between yourself and your co-workers?  Do you look forward to getting together with your best buddies to chat about your lives and your career?  Do you thrive on the team environment and collegial atmosphere? These are, of course, all legitimate areas for you to consider when evaluating the feasibility of work from home.

Consider, too, the benefits of a schedule where you don’t have to accommodate those last-minute meetings or problem-solving sessions that force you to stay late at the office.  Working from home gives you the option of running out to take care of errands and chores that would usually have to be squeezed into your weekend.   As long as you are able to stay focused on your professional objectives, you'll undoubtedly find that you are considerably more productive and able to ccomplish a lot more in your work day.

You also will no longer be subjected to the ‘nay-sayers’ in your company who manage to erode group morale and turn everything into a complaint.  That, alone, has GOT to be worth a lot!  Instead, you’ll only have yourself to answer to, and as long as you can maintain a positive mental attitude, you should have nothing to worry about.

In fact, chances are, you’ll have considerably more time to spend with your family and friends. For many people, this is a dream come true.
