So, what will an internship do for you? First of all, it will give you the experience necessary to work in the field. It will allow you to actually apply the knowledge you possess to real world situations.
Secondly, it will make it possible for you to begin creating that all-important network that will serve you well in your future professional life. By starting early, you should be well ahead of the game. Focus on those co-workers who you feel could provide you with references or guidance as to future positions. Note that you’ll have to do your absolute best for them in order to demonstrate that you are, indeed, a worthy candidate. (Nothing comes free in this life!)
Third, an internship may just furnish you the opportunity to show your company what you can do, which in turn, may lead to your being offered the position. In fact, it’s not at all uncommon for a company to reach into their intern pools and select a few of their most motivated and ambitious students.
Fourth, an internship will allow you to develop new skills and successfully increase your field of interest. You may even find that you have strengths you never thought about. And, having multiple strengths will make you much more marketable.
Fifth, an internship is an opportunity for you to take that horse around the track to see how he runs! Perhaps you don’t like the job you thought you would quite as much. Use your time wisely to choose a future career that suits you.
For the above reasons, an internship is worth its weight in--providing that you take full advantage of it. Be observant and interested in what you see around you. Ask intelligent questions, and learn from your environment. Use this opportunity as a springboard for your future.
