13 Things That Will Torpedo Your Chances of Landing That Job

1 You don’t evidence sufficient interest or enthusiasm in the position being offer. (Employers are usually justifiably proud of what their company is doing and likes to see some amount of passion from the interviewee.)

2. You have little knowledge of the industry or the company. (Now that’s a real
No-brainer!  If you’re going to apply for a position, don’t just do it haphazardly.  Make every attempt to education yourself before hand so you can talk intelligently during your interview.)

3. Your interest and skill set doesn’t match what the company sees as being important. (Your best defense against this is to make sure you are sufficiently trained in all of the common office products. To do this, you can either take an on line course, or else go to your local community college.)

4 .You have no idea of what your career plans and goals are, and when the interviewer asks you where you want to be in 2 years  you just look uncomfortable and mutter that you really hadn’t thought about it. (Well: spend some time thinking about this before you get to that interview! Remember: you aren’t being asked to commit to anything… The interviewer only wants to know what you are HOPING to do!!)

5. You are unable to express yourself clearly. (This one is a problem that seasoned executives have long discussed and lamented. And that is, that for some reason, young people today don’t know the meaning of the word ‘Enunciation.’ Look it up. It will help you immensely.)

6) You have no knowledge of the industry represented by the company. (So, why did you apply in the first place?)

7) You are ill –prepared for the interview, and either don’t present yourself well or else you come across as being un-responsive.  (Hint: employers like quick-witted applicants who are able to follow their conversation and respond appropriately. Practice, practice, practice!)

8) You are too focused on the benefits and the salary and not on the position. (Not unusually, an interviewer wants to know what YOU can do for HIM, and if you spend a lot of time trying to coax information out of him as to when raises are given or how many days of leave are given the first 6 months, he will rightfully conclude that your only interest is a selfish one, and there goes THAT job!)

9) You are indifferent or evasive in your answers. (If the employer can never pin you down, he will come away from your interview feeling that you were hiding something and that isn’t going to get you hired.)

10) You look sloppy; your clothes are wrinkled and your hair is a mess. (Well, who could blame the employer for not signing you up?)

11) Your resume is presented on a sheet of paper with ketchup and mustard stains on it. (Again, who could blame you interviewer for putting your resume at the bottom at the stack?)  Clean up your act next time and present your credentials professionally.)

12) You evidence a basic lack of respect and courtesy, failing to say 'please' and 'thank you' or refer to your interviewer as ‘Sir’ or ‘Ma’am.’ (There’s just no excuse for this: and you deserve to lose the job if you behave this way!)

13) The employer can not offer you the salary range you’ve stated. (For goodness sake, research what other comparable positions are paying before opening your mouth to answer this question!!)

GOOD LUCK!
