Applying for a Job on the Internet

The internet is a wonderful addition to our job search resources.  It is SO wonderful, in fact, that you can get easily side-tracked and forget what it was that you were trying to accomplish!

Here are some pointers to help make your job hunting more focused and more successful.
First, pick out several sites you like and use them consistently.  If you select more than 5 or 6, the task can quickly overwhelm you.

When addressing your e mail to a hiring authority, always use the subject line to include specifics about the position. i.e. write: ”International Marketing Specialist position. Post #3227” instead of ‘Job Application.”

Update the resumes you’ve posted on each site on a weekly basis. It’s not that anything in your actual document will have changed, but rather, that in so doing, your resume appears as a new document.  You can therefore add a couple of new words, change an initial, put in abbreviations—anything so long as change SOMEthing in your text.

If you use web sites that ask you to put a title on your resume, don’t just say ‘Administrative Assistant’ or ‘Secretary.’ Instead, put something like Absolutely Amazing Administrative Assistant’ or ‘Sensationally Savvy Secretary’ in order to differentiate your resume from the others out there.

Although employers would have you believe otherwise, their job postings are really little more than a ‘wish list.’ The tendency is for them to include every desirable skill they can think of, and hope for the best.  Therefore, if you don’t meet every single criteria on the list, don’t worry about it. Apply anyway!

Finally, when e mailing your resume to an H.R. department, make sure to title it “Suzy  Smith.Sensational Secretary—instead of Resume No. 2 or November 1. Resume.  The less the hiring staff has to do to access your document, the better it will be for you. If they have to spend time re-naming and re-saving your resume so that it will be easy to find, they might just decide not to bother with it.  Make their lives easy, and it will be much appreciated.
