It goes without saying that if you like your job, you’ll probably be better at it and will stick with it longer.
What then, is the best way to choose a career that suits you? Well, first you’ll need to assess your likes and dislikes, your strengths and weaknesses. Ask yourself what you really enjoy doing? Would you be happiest spending your work day helping older adults with their daily chores? Or are you perhaps more drawn towards being around young children?
How about your academic strengths? Have you always been good in Math? If you’re highly detailed person, an accounting position might appeal to you. Do you enjoy traveling to new destinations and sampling the local cuisine? Would you be comfortable exploring new places? A career as a travel agent could be just right for you.
Is food a major focus in your life? Do you find pleasure in making that perfect dish to serve your friends and family? Training at a culinary institute to becoming a professional chef can be both satisfying and financially rewarding.
Do you find the technical areas of science or physics to be more appealing? Teaching would be a valid profession. Or, are you perhaps more drawn to nature and the outdoors? If so, a job as a Park Ranger would be worth considering.
If you have always been interested in computers and technology, check out the opportunities that exist for Help Desk professionals and repair technicians. In this type of position, you would need to be able to see the logical connections between both the hardware and its operating system.
An outgoing personality and ability to connect to others would be key for a job in public relations, advertising or lobbying.
The point is, that by carefully selecting the things you know you like to do—and are good at doing—you’ll stand a much better chance of ending up in a career that is interesting and fun.
