Jump-Starting Your Small Business - Part I

Here we are in the New Year already! The question comes as to what you plan to do differently to jump start your small business to increase both its sales and its visibility?

Here are some suggestions to help you along your way.

1.     Write a news release about new trends in your industry and don’t forget to mention your own business and a special feature that would be of interest to readers.

2.     Force yourself to make  3 cold calls each day.  Not only will this give you a good perspective on potential new clients, but it will also enable you to accustom yourself to what is usually an uncomfortable practice for most business owners.

3.     Devise a slogan that characterizes your business and use it on everything from your business cards and stationery to your car and signage.  This is the way to develop a brand image which will follow you for as long as your business is active.

4.     Start blogging  (on FaceBook, Twitter, Flickr, Linkedin or one of the many other social networking sites that have sprung up recently on some aspect of your company—not for the sake of traditional advertising but instead to establish yourself as an expert on whatever subject you choose.  Business growth will follow once you’ve achieved this.

5.     Find yourself a new niche for your products. If you make your own dog biscuits, branch out and start making cat treats.  If you sell children’s clothing, think about creating a matching line for parents.

6.     Join an organization in your community to widen your exposure and contact net.  If you are able to devote your time, energy and effort to this endeavor, it can reap rich rewards in the final analysis.

In the next article we‘ll explore additional ways of driving business to your door.  In the meantime, take a few moments to reflect about where you’ve been and where you’d like to go in the future.
