Who, ME--Retired?? Finding a Job In Your 50's and Beyond

Finding a new career if you’re 50+ years old isn’t easy. In fact, it is one of the hardest things that you are ever likely to have to do. Especially now that the economy has gone to the dogs. (Sorry, puppies!)

We are increasingly seeing seasoned managers, directors and executives become unemployed at an advanced stage in their careers. If you think finding a position right out of school is tough, talk to those who have 20+ years of experience.   They are having even greater difficulty identifying a company who will agree to hire them.

First, their salary level is too high. Second, there may be issues with their physical health. Third, they may not be as knowledgeable about existing technology as are younger employees..  Fourth, the hiring authority may be 20 years younger than the candidates, and scared witless about hiring someone with that much experience. And the list goes on and on.

However, with tenacity and persistence, you CAN find positions even after being downsized from a lucrative career. There are still companies out there who value the intelligence, wisdom and maturity of someone who has been around that block before. These traits, coupled with a well-developed work ethic, will pay off in the end.

Before your resume hits the streets, however, you would be well-advised to update your tech skills.  If this means taking classes at a community college or hiring a high school student to teach you the ins and outs of social networking, do it! Other areas that you may need to review are Excel Spreadsheets, Power Point and Search Engine Optimization tools. With these under your belt, plus the maturity and discipline you already possess, chances of finding a position increase drastically.
